Application of Titanium Alloy Plates in the Power Industry

September 06, 2019

Titanium alloy plates find extensive use in various applications within the power industry, particularly in coastal thermal and nuclear power stations where seawater is used as a coolant in condensers. Here are the key aspects of their utilization and benefits:

Corrosion Resistance and Longevity:

  1. Condenser Applications: Traditionally, condensers have used copper-nickel alloys such as aluminum brass tubes, which are susceptible to severe corrosion in polluted seawater containing hydrogen sulfide. Titanium condensers offer superior corrosion resistance against chemical corrosion from seawater, sulfides, chlorides, and localized corrosion caused by marine organisms and sediments. They are also capable of quickly repairing protective oxide films damaged by abrasives like sand and diamond particles in seawater flowing at velocities up to 2m/s. This resilience allows titanium condensers to operate effectively over extended periods without significant corrosion-related issues.

  2. Steam Turbine Blades: Titanium's high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance make it suitable for manufacturing steam turbine blades, particularly for the last few stages of low-pressure turbines. Compared to martensitic chromium stainless steel traditionally used for turbine blades, titanium reduces centrifugal forces on the blade roots by approximately 40% at the same rotational speeds. This reduction in stress contributes significantly to the longevity and operational efficiency of turbines, especially in environments prone to chloride and sulfide contamination, which can severely degrade the fatigue performance of conventional steels like Cr13.

  3. Generator End Rings: Titanium alloy plates are also employed as generator end rings, critical components in turbine generator systems. These rings require high strength, excellent fracture resistance, non-magnetic properties, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking in water environments. Titanium alloys meet these criteria effectively, providing higher fatigue strength compared to stainless steel in chloride solutions and demonstrating superior resistance to stress corrosion.

Conclusion:

The use of titanium alloy plates in the power industry, whether in condensers, turbine blades, or generator end rings, offers substantial advantages in terms of corrosion resistance, durability, and performance under challenging environmental conditions. These benefits contribute significantly to the reliability, efficiency, and longevity of power generation equipment, making titanium a preferred material for critical components in modern power plants.
