Precautions for Using Titanium Electrodes

December 10, 2021

Titanium electrodes offer stable dimensions, ensuring consistent electrode spacing during electrolysis and maintaining stable cell voltage. They possess high corrosion resistance, long service life, and lightweight characteristics, which reduce labor intensity. The titanium base material is reusable, and the electrodes operate at low voltage, consuming less power and achieving high current efficiency. However, despite being termed "insoluble," titanium electrodes do have a low consumption rate and their lifespan can vary from 0.5 to 50 years depending on usage conditions and environment. To ensure safe and efficient operation and to maximize performance, the following precautions should be observed:

  1. Surface Characteristics:

    • After oxidation and sintering, titanium electrodes have a black surface. An untreated surface appears blue and lacks electrode functionality. The black side should face the cathode during use.
  2. Current Density:

    • Normal working current density ranges from 2000 to 5000 A/m². Excessive current can lead to overly intense reactions, shortening the anode's lifespan.
  3. Electrolyte Composition:

    • The electrolyte should be free of cyanide and fluoride ions, as these impurities can severely corrode the titanium substrate.
  4. Electrode Spacing:

    • The distance between anode and cathode can be adjusted based on specific conditions, typically ranging from 5 to 25 mm. Larger distances increase power consumption, while excessively small gaps can cause short circuits due to cathodic scaling.
  5. Handling and Installation:

    • Avoid significant bending or impacts to the Titanium Anode, which can cause the precious metal coating to detach.
    • Before operation, check for any short circuits between anode and cathode, and avoid using if a short circuit is detected.
  6. Operating Temperature:

    • The electrolyte temperature should ideally be maintained between 25°C and 80°C.
  7. Shutdown Procedures:

    • When shutting down, rinse the electrode surfaces with clean water to avoid prolonged soaking in the solution without power. If possible, maintain a small protective current of 2-5 A to safeguard the electrodes.
  8. Startup and Shutdown Protocol:

    • Gradually increase the current when starting the electrolysis process, and similarly, reduce it gradually when stopping.
  9. Electrode Cleanliness:

    • Ensure the anode remains clean and free from oil or other contaminants, which can affect electrolysis efficiency and electrode lifespan.
  10. Surface Protection:
