The Development of the Titanium Industry and Its Special Relationship with the PTA Industry

PTA, also known as purified terephthalic acid, is one of the most widely used basic chemical raw materials. It is primarily used in the production of polyester products, which can be categorized into "fiber" and "non-fiber" uses. Fiber applications are mainly in the textile industry, while non-fiber applications include industries such as film, containers, insulation materials, and engineering plastics, making its uses extremely broad. China is the world's largest producer and consumer of PTA, accounting for about 56% of global production. In the context of severe international pandemics over recent years, China's dependence on foreign PTA has further decreased. This has spurred the domestic PTA industry, rapidly increasing the demand for titanium materials and titanium equipment.

Due to the corrosive environment of PTA plants and the excellent corrosion resistance of titanium alloys, titanium alloys have become the preferred material for PTA equipment. Titanium can withstand various corrosive environments in PTA plants. In PTA plants, titanium is mainly used in protective forms such as titanium linings and full titanium equipment. Titanium-lined equipment uses an outer layer of carbon steel to withstand the pressure of the medium, while the inner titanium lining resists corrosion from the medium. Full titanium components entirely use titanium to handle both corrosion and pressure from the medium.

Titanium is primarily used in three sections of PTA plants: the oxidation unit, crystallization unit, and solvent recovery unit. The most severe corrosion in the oxidation unit occurs in the oxidation reactor and the top-level 3 condensers. Therefore, all equipment in contact with the process medium in this area uses titanium materials. In the crystallization unit, the most severe corrosion occurs in the crystallizer and the top condensers, where equipment uses compatible titanium alloy materials. In the solvent recovery unit, tubes and tower trays in the reboilers of dehydration towers operating above 120 degrees Celsius use relevant grades of titanium alloy materials.


It is evident that titanium materials are extensively used and have a high consumption rate in PTA equipment. Therefore, even during the severe domestic pandemic years, the titanium industry maintained rapid growth, closely related to the rapid development of the domestic PTA industry.
